Margaret Cowan
As Intake Coordinator, Margaret is often the first point of contact for potential clients and referral sources seeking mental health counseling services at Samaritan. Organized, compassionate, and detail-oriented, Margaret Cowan connects individuals with appropriate mental health support and ensures a smooth onboarding process for our clients. Margaret brings her knowledge and experience to provide a wide range of available mental health resources to all who contact Samaritan.
She is the Founding Keeper of I Am My Sister’s Keeper, a nonprofit she established in 2018 with the mission to “alleviate many of the stressors which prevent single mothers from becoming successful.” A single mother herself to three extraordinary daughters—Cayden, Camryn, and Camaya—Margaret’s work is deeply rooted in personal experience and passion for uplifting others.
Margaret is currently pursuing her Master of Social Work at the University of Memphis, where she also earned her Bachelor’s degree in Sociology with a minor in Nonprofit Management, graduating Summa Cum Laude in 2022. She is on track to graduate again in May 2025. She aspires to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), driven by her commitment to increasing the representation of therapists of color in underserved communities.
Dedicated to her professional growth, Margaret has completed numerous training programs, including the Executive Director Bootcamp by the Tennessee Nonprofit Network and fundraising and leadership courses through the University of Memphis and Christian Brothers University. She also serves as a member of the Black-led Nonprofit Alliance at the Community Foundation of Greater Memphis, where she also contributes her expertise to their Grantmaking Committee.
When not immersed in her work or studies, Margaret enjoys reading, traveling, cooking, and spending time with her family and friends. Known for her warm personality and genuine compassion, Margaret is a beacon of hope and strength for the communities she serves.
